Spending time in Uganda has a way of giving you new perspective about life. Internally it changes how you look at contentment, joy, and purpose; and externally it impacts how you look at almost everything, from your abundance of food and resources, and most certainly the public education system that is available through our tax dollars.

Today is a day that is so very hard to put into words. Typing an account almost seems like a disservice to the people that I was blessed to spend my day with, but I shall try nonetheless. As the Executive Director for FoDU, I am never content with the services we are offering across Uganda. I believe that we can always fine-tune our work, and always be on the lookout for new populations to serve, and that is what has led to today.

When a friend shared an NPR article titled, “The Problem with Free Menstrual Pads” and stating “free menstrual pads may not be enough to help girls with their period,” it worried me just a little bit. After all, I spend a good deal of my time begging people for money for no other reason than to provide free menstrual pads to girls in Uganda. But then I read the article.

Today we celebrated the opening of the Girls' Changing Room at Pageya Primary School. The Changing Room will be a place for the girls to care for themselves during their periods, rest when they feel unwell, and speak with teachers in private when they need counsel. Everyone was excited for this day, and the girls were eager to see their building.

In two weeks time I will have the joy and privilege of beginning yet another trip to Uganda. All of these trips are unique, as each team of volunteers is new, and the tasks before us are often changing. It brings me great hope reconnecting with our courageous staff that are on the ground serving day in and day out, and to hear updates on the small and large victories and challenges we are both facing and overcoming.

I remember hair products and lip gloss being a pretty big deal when I was about 13. 

Hair products and lip gloss were pretty big deals when my daughter and her friends were about 13 too. 

Oh, the luxury of being a middle class teenage girl in the United States. 

There are certain universalities to this age. 

Not having a uniform when everyone else at school does stings. Being left out of a secret or being teased because you have cheap shoes hurts. Girls around the globe want to feel loved and accepted.
